Picacho Peak

  • Post last modified:November 30, 2025

Known for its switchbacks, steep rocky terrain, and sections equipped with steel cables and handrails, Picacho Peak is a remnant of volcanic activity and is often used as a navigational landmark. Due to its challenging nature, fellow hikers were understandably alarmed to see an ironing board making its way up the trail. From a distance, we resembled medical personnel carrying a stretcher to an injured hiker. As we got closer, and the true identity of the “stretcher” became clear, a wave of relief washed over their faces — followed immediately by bewilderment. Relieved to know that we weren’t on a rescue mission, we stopped to chitchat for a moment before continuing onward.

Once at the top, we sought out another group’s “group mom” and secured some much needed sunscreen. After taking in the views — plus multiple photos — we began our journey back down. That’s when I realized that hauling an ironing board down the steep paths equipped with steel cables and handrails is considerably harder than hauling one up.
