Filming the Documentary: Safford Peak

  • Post last modified:February 4, 2026

When asked if I’d be interested in being part of a university student’s documentary, my immediate thought was, “Fuck yeah. Let’s get some fun B-roll for my future In Memoriam.”

I showed up to set and quickly realized this kid was about to cook. After wrapping extended studio interviews, we headed out for an afternoon hike to document ironing in its natural habitat at Safford Peak.

We met up at the parking area and set off with a filming camera close behind. While trekking through Sanctuary Cove we may have overshot the trailhead just a bit, but as we navigated our way back, we stumbled across a tortoise and a couple of deer.

We were limited on time and hadn’t planned on hiking all the way to the peak. Shortly after turning around and heading back towards the car, something unusual caught my eye: a rock formation that unmistakably resembled a pig. I instantly knew what needed to be done — I was going to ride that pig.

It was only from this direction that the rock formation revealed its true form. Completely natural. Entirely ridiculous. Proof that sometimes all it takes is a little imagination — and a shift in perspective — to uncover what was already there.
